OLD TOWN. This area is historically renowned for its seedy history. It was once the location of the city gallows. In 1736, this was the spot in which Captain Porteous was lynched. Fortunately today, visitors will not be able to witness hangings or lynchings. Part of the city's past can be seen by the bits of the Flodden Wall remaining from the 16th century and the Telfer's Wall from the 17th century. This area is also very popular today for its numerous shops, bars, and restaurants.

PARLIAMENT SQUARE. This cobblestone heart-shaped design marks the place that was the Tolbooth. It then became a gathering place for Parliament and the General Assembly. Lastly, this location became a place of imprisonment. Today, visitors spit on this mark for good luck.

PARLIAMENT SQUARE. This cross now stands where the former cross dating to 1365 once stood. In the past, this was the spot where traders would meet to do business with merchants. Additional historical events took place in this area include the hanging of General Montrose from the 17th century. Declarations of Kings and Queens still take place here today.

PARLIAMENT SQUARE. In the 1600's, this historical attraction was the place where Scottish Parliament would meet. Today this building is just as alive as it was hundreds of years ago as lawyers meet here to discuss their cases with clients. The decor inside consists of a beautiful hammerbeam ceiling, a fireplace that dates to the 19th century, and portraits from renowned artists including Roubiliac and Turnerelli.

One of Edinburgh's most renowned monuments is this Gothic structure built in honor of the then-controversial writer Sir Walter Scott. This structure consists of a church spire that is over two hundred feet tall. Sitting inside the spire is the famous author and his dog, Maida, accompanied by sixty-four carved representations of the characters in his novels. Visitors who make the 287-step climb to the top of the monument will enjoy the spectacular view afforded over the city.
